Bourne on Future Contingents and Three - valued Logic ∗ Daisuke Kachi

چکیده
Recently, Bourne constructed a system of three-valued logic that he supposed to replace à Lukasiewicz’s three-valued logic in view of the problems of future contingents. In this paper, I will show first that Bourne’s system makes no improvement to à Lukasiewicz’s system. However, finding some good motivations and lessons in his attempt, next I will suggest a better way of achieving his original goal in some sense. The crucial part of my way lies in reconsidering the significance of the intermediate truthvalue so as to reconstruct à Lukasiewicz’s three-valued logic as a kind of extensional modal logic based on partial logic.

متن کاملDOMINO: Trivalent Logic Semantics in Bivalent Syntax Clothes
The paper describes a rather general software mechanism developed primarily for decision making in dynamic and uncertain environments (typical application: managing overbooking). DOMINO (Decision-Oriented Mechanism for "IF" as Non-deterministic Operator) is meant to deal with undecidability due to any kind of future contingents. Its description here is self-contained but, since a validation is ...
متن کاملA Dynamic Solution to the Puzzle of Sea Battle
The puzzle of sea battle involves an argument that is an instantiation of reasoning by cases. Its premises include the conditionals “if there is a/no sea battle tomorrow, it is necessarily so”. It has a fatalistic conclusion. Two readings of necessity can be distinguished: absolute and relative necessity. The conditionals are valid for the latter reading. By the restrictor view of “if” in lingu...
